Theories range from a technical failure to human error or a terrorist attack. At this time, no possibility is being ruled out

A Boeing 787 operated by India’s national carrier, Air India, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, bound for London, but crashed just one minute after takeoff. According to early reports, the aircraft went down in the Meghani area, a residential zone located near the airport.

The plane reportedly crashed flat onto a building complex used as housing for medical staff of a nearby hospital. Five people on the ground were also killed, bringing the total death toll to 247.

On board were approximately 242 individuals: 169 Indian passengers, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens, and 1 Canadian, in addition to 12 crew members. They are the two confirmed survivors for the moment and over 290 dead since the aircraft crashed into a dormitory for doctors.

Rescue operations were launched immediately, but authorities faced significant challenges in reaching the crash site due to widespread fires and the risk of secondary explosions. Firefighters, ambulances, and military personnel are still working in the area.

Air India officially confirmed the crash with a statement released shortly after news of the accident broke. The airline said it was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy and assured full cooperation with local authorities, emergency services, and the aviation safety agency.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident. Possible scenarios include a technical malfunction, human error, or an act of terrorism, but none of these possibilities have been ruled out at this stage. The aircraft’s black boxes, which are crucial for reconstructing the events leading up to the crash, have been located and will be analyzed in the coming hours.

Today’s disaster echoes a previous tragedy: Indian Airlines Flight 113, which crashed near Ahmedabad in 1988, killing 133 people. The chilling coincidence reopens old wounds and once again raises serious concerns about air traffic safety in the region.
